Start with the location

Choose an easily reached spot with space for the dog to approach and move away. Keep bowls out of a tight doorway or a turning point on a busy walking route. Check whether the floor around the water bowl regularly becomes wet.

A new bowl is only one part of the setup. A clearer approach, a second clean bowl, or quicker spill removal may be the most useful change.

Compare size and cleanup

Match the bowl’s opening, depth, and capacity to how the dog uses it. Check that it stays in place during ordinary use. For a mat, measure the footprint of both bowls and allow a margin for small drips without creating an edge across a main walkway.
